There is no art in growing your own garlic. You put the tubers in the ground in the autumn and nature does the work. Did you plant your own garlic last year? If so, now is the time to harvest the bulbs.
Harvesting garlic
Garlic usually ripens in July or August. It is best to judge for yourself when to harvest. Are the leaves turning yellow and does the stem start to droop? Then the bulbs can be grubbed up, leaf and all.
Drying garlic
The best thing to do now is to leave the bulbs to dry before storing. How you do it is up to you, but we won’t keep you from reading this from Gardening reader MariĆ«tte Paardkooper: “I hung my first garlic crop out to dry on the washing line in my shed because it had a nice draught. Next time I hope to harvest even bigger bulbs.
